Fish Therapy

Fish therapy is becoming more and more popular in Asia today. The fishes are called Garra Rufa and they originated from a hot spring near Kangal in Turkey where they were first discovered for their healing power. They are also called ‘Doctor Fish’ as these fishes help in easing the symptoms of those suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. They actually nibble away your scaly and dead skin, leaving your skin smooth and glowing healty skin.

It is a good treatment for those who suffer from psoriasis or eczema and over time is said to cure these patients completely of their ailments. The secret of the Garra Rufa lies in their saliva which contains a certain enzyme that is good for the skin!.

The fish strike and lick the plaques of the skin disorders, which have been softened by the warm water. This clears away the plaque scales, causing minor bleeding, and exposing the lesion to the water. This may also cause drainage of pus in patients with abscesses. The Garra Rufa prefer to attack diseased rather then healthy skin simply because it is easier to nibble at it.

The fish nibbles at the diseased skin area, the upper skin layer is completely removed. At the same time the fish leave traces of their saliva on your skin, which results in Skin Renewal and Re-growth and normalisation of the affected area of skin. This process is absolutely free of pain. You simply feel a pleasant tickling on the skin to which you will get used to, very fast. These fish have no teeth, clear up the scared Skin through the actions of their mouth without causing any pain to the patients. Patients feel their skin becoming smooth. It is necessary to bath with the fish for two hours at a time each day, for 21 days to achieve the best result.

Eat Well and Lower Blood Pressure

To some the single most important thing to help lower high blood pressure is to look closely at the food they eat. The dark cold miserable weather tends to make people reach for "comfort foods"

As Christmas approaches we once again warn to go easy on the white stuff and check food labels carefully to be certain about the amount of salt in your diet as the amount of salt in food has a strong effect on health - especially blood pressure.

So obvious things to cut are crisps and nuts with drinks, "party food" which again is highly salted to accompany drinks - sausage rolls, mini quiche tartlets, the ever popular bite sized pasty and cheese on a stick. If you want to do yourself a favour munch celery sticks, fresh fruit and unsalted nuts.

Common presents at Christmas are food hampers which are packed with unusual foods and snacks that tend to be long shelf life items.

If you want to give a hamper as a present to someone who has high blood pressure you can save money and show you care by assembling your own low salt food hamper. And why not include the latest Omron M10 blood pressure monitor with a note explaining that the recipient can monitor the change in BP whislt sticking to a low salt diet.

Is salt restriction necessary in high blood pressure?

Dr Md Abedur Rahman
Patients often ask, what changes in lifestyle can improve their blood pressure controlled. In response, we doctors often recommend that reducing body weight, decreasing intake of dietary salt and limiting consumption of alcohol can be beneficial. Many people with high blood pressure see salt as a villain. According to conventional wisdom, just a few shakes can send blood pressure high. But is salt really so dangerous? After decades of studies, scientists finally have answer to the question: Yes and no. For many people, extra salt really does raise blood pressure. In a few cases, however, it seems to lower pressure. And for some people, it does not really matter.Nobody knows why some people are sensitive to salt and others are not. But researchers have some clear-cut advice — to be on the safe side, everyone should keep a lid on salt intake. The amount of salt that we eat has a direct effect on our blood pressure. The more salt we take, the higher our blood pressure goes. This is true, not only in people with high blood pressure, but also in people with normal blood pressure. A high salt intake also causes other health damage such as greater retention of water in your body, which leads to swelling of the ankles. How much salt should I consume each day?The Food and Nutrition Board (of America) recommends a daily intake of no more than 2,300 mg. And as one study shows, reducing salt to 1,500 mg a day may be even better. The study published in the December 18, 2001 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, examined six diets and found that a low-sodium regimen could make a healthy diet even healthier.Half of the study subjects ate a typical diet but were divided into three groups, each consuming different levels of sodium: high (3,300 mg each day), intermediate (2,400 mg per day), and low (1,500 mg each day). The participants in the other half of the study ate meals rich in fruits and vegetables but low in fat and cholesterol (also known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension or DASH diet).Their diets also were subdivided into three different levels of salt consumption. The one-sixth of the subjects who ate the lowest-sodium DASH diet enjoyed the greatest reduction in blood pressure, even among people who did not have high blood pressure (also called hypertension) to start with. This group lost an average of 9 points from their systolic pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) — the biggest drop in any group.Weinberger's findings highlight two important points. First, some people can significantly reduce their blood pressure by cutting back on salt. Second, salt is just a start. You can give your heart extra protection by getting plenty of fruits and vegetables every day and going easy on fats. Not only will you lower your blood pressure, you will reduce your risk of atherosclerosis (a form of hardening of the arteries) and heart disease. If I do not have high blood pressure, do I still need to watch my salt?Another recent NHLBI study suggests that salt sensitivity can be a dangerous condition — even among people who do not have high blood pressure. Researchers followed up on a group of 708 people who had been evaluated for salt sensitivity and hypertension 25 years ago and were surprised by their findings.Subjects who had normal blood pressure but were sensitive to salt were just as likely as subjects with hypertension to have died of heart disease.Since there is no blood test or other quick way to measure salt sensitivity, it is best not to take any chances. How can I cut back on salt? You can start by going easy on the saltshaker. It is important to understand, however, that the average person gets 90 percent of his or her salt from other sources. Many "convenience" foods such as frozen dinners, restaurant meals, luncheon meats, fast foods, and canned soups are extremely high in salt. The best way to protect yourself is to prepare meals at home. If you do eat processed foods, check the labels carefully — and aim for a daily dose of 2,300 mg of sodium or less from all your food sources.

The Secret of Olive Tree

Ask an ancient Greek what the most useful object on earth is, and the answer might surprise you. According to mythological tradition, when asked to produce an item of ultimate utility, Athena, goddess of wisdom, created the tiny olive. Since then, this amazingly versatile botanical has served as food, medicine, fuel, as well as a symbol of peace and prosperity. The Bible makes over 200 mentions of the olive, and Mohammad advised its use as a cure for 'seventy diseases.' Some theologians even believe that the olive tree is the 'Tree of Life' described in the final chapters of Revelations, whose leaves would heal the nations of the world.

Today, as interest increases in taking a holistic and natural approach to health, the olive again is gaining a seemingly miraculous reputation as an antibiotic, antioxidant, and key part of the healthful combination of foods that make up the Mediterranean diet. Modern science has accumulated a virtual mountain of data that confirms the same thing that herbal practitioners and healers have been saying for thousands of years; that olives and olive leaf are a powerful tool for combating disease and maintaining health.

Antibiotics have been labeled as the greatest achievement of modern medicine, providing relief from a range of diseases too numerous to mention. In light of this, it may be surprising to learn that natural antibiotics such as olive have been utilized for thousands of years. Folk tradition, and more recently modern medicine, have observed that the natural chemistry of the olive, the olive tree, and it's leaves have intrinsic anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. Olive has been found to bring aid to those suffering from conditions as wide ranging as colds and flues, herpes, shingles, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure and more. In the early 1900's, a bitter compound was found in the leaves of certain olive trees called "Oleuropein." This compound was determined to be part of the olive tree's powerful disease resistant structure.

In 1962, an Italian researcher recorded that oleuropein had the ability to lower blood pressure in animals. Other European researchers validated that claim and also found it to increase blood flow in the coronary arteries, relieve arrhythmias and prevent intestinal muscle spasms. There are studies in Israel that found the leaf is effective against Streptococcus by damaging the cell membrane of the bacteria, disabling it. Unlike modern antibiotics, there is no resistant strains to the relieving effects of olive. It's use does not spur the development of so called 'super bugs.' It is merely one of the tools that mother nature has provided us to improve our lives.

Picture a piece of metal left exposed to the air. As time passes, the surface of the metal will slowly become coated with a layer of iron oxide, or rust. Why does this happen? A process known as oxidation, in which one molecule or atom steals an electron away from another, resulting in a chemical change. Within our bodies, a family of compounds known as free radicals move throughout our cells, oxidizing neighboring compounds and causing damage to components of the cell, including our DNA. Dr. Denham Harmon is credited with producing the free radical theory of aging, stating the accumulated effect of free radical damage is the cause of the gradual decreased function of the body over time, as well as the growth of cancers.

Free radicals enter our bodies via pollution from sources such as smog, cigarette smoke, pesticides and alcohol. They are likewise formed as a byproduct of cellular respiration as oxygen molecules are brought into the cell and used to break down sugars. The presence of heavy metals such as mercury in dramatically 'supercharges' these free radicals, causing even further damage.

Antioxidants are so named because they are willing to freely give an electron, reducing the free radical to an inert compound. Olive is a notably rich source of antioxidants, with extracts based on the leaves providing nearly 5 times the free radical absorbing capacity of vitamin C, surpassing both grape seed and green tea extracts. When free radicals are kept in check, the body simply performs better. We have more energy, our muscles respond as they used to, our immune systems are dramatically bolstered. In the case of olive, combining the natural antibiotic capabilities with the healthful bolstering effects of free radical removal produces an environment in which illness causing germs, viruses and bacterium simply cannot survive.

Imagine how much better you will feel when you have nature fighting on your side, rather than against you! Olive can be added to the diet via eating the fruit and olive oil, though greater concentrations of the active ingredients, such as oleuropein are found in the leaves. These leaves are often made into olive tea, or extracted into tinctures, capsules, soaps and skin cream which may be found in health food stores or online. Olive is safe for all ages, and simply doesn't produce any ill effects based on its consumption. Even pets can consume olive leaf powder on their food to enjoy the same benefits as their owners.
